Beatty & Wozniak Promotes Theresa Sauer to Equity Shareholder

Theresa Sauer

DENVER (February 21, 2023) — Beatty & Wozniak is delighted to announce that Theresa Sauer has been promoted to Equity Shareholder, effective January 2023. Based in the Denver, Colorado office, Sauer embodies a commitment to excellence and collaboration that allows Beatty & Wozniak to be a firm of choice for the energy and natural resources sectors.

“Theresa epitomizes the firm’s core values,” shared Bret Sumner, Senior Partner. “She is a leader within the firm and within industry as a whole.  As a consummate team player, she elevates everyone around her – from colleagues to clients.”

Sauer returned to Beatty & Wozniak in 2020 after leaving for three years to serve as in-house lead counsel for one of the largest shale producers in the United States. She played a pivotal role in directing risk assessments and guiding operational decisions to ensure best outcomes, both financially and in compliance with environmental regulations.

With more than a decade of experience, Sauer specializes in supporting the development and operations sides of the upstream and midstream segments of the oil and gas industry on matters involving federal land access, species management, royalty interests, midstream agreements and master service agreements. She also drafts and negotiates lease amendments, surface use agreements, surface and subsurface easements, water agreements, data trades and various supply-chain agreements.

Sauer counsels clients on surface rights issues, including state, federal and fee matters, endangered species, legacy environmental contamination, disposal wells and well control responses. Her interest in the oil and gas industry began in 1999 when she served as a natural resources policy advisor for former Colorado Governor Bill Owens.

“Since starting at Beatty & Wozniak as an associate in 2012, this firm has felt like home,” said Sauer. “I am surrounded by colleagues who challenge and support me, making me a better attorney. Inviting me to become an equity shareholder is a true honor and I look forward to this next chapter growing my practice and relationship with the firm.”

Recognized as one of Denver’s Top Women in Energy in 2019 and 2017 by the Denver Business Journal, Sauer has a reputation for holding herself to the highest standards of excellence in all aspects of life. She maintains an impressive work-life balance through an array of adventures in the great outdoors with her two daughters and husband (Bernie).

Sauer earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and a law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She is admitted to practice law in Colorado, North Dakota and Wyoming.
